Escaped Prisoner

May 22, 2018 at approximately 3:00 p.m. Nelson Mendoza was apprehended in Adair County Missouri with an unidentified female.  Further charges will be pending.  Updates will be provided as they become available.


(Press Release) – The Wapello County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in locating an escaped prisoner.

Nelson Mendoza age 31 of Iowa and California was receiving medical treatment at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center  early Sunday  morning  May 20th when he escaped custody.  Mendoza has been held in the Wapello County Jail for Willful Injury, Assault, Interference with Official Acts and Possessing Contraband in a Correctional Facility.

Any information the public may have on anything suspicious or possibly related to the incident are encouraged to call the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office (641-684-4350) or the Ottumwa Police Department (641-683-0661).  Mendoza was last seen just north of the Ottumwa Regional Health Center when he entered the wooded area, and authorities lost contact.


Mendoza is a Hispanic male 5’07”, 200 pounds, brown hair and brown eyes.  Last seen wearing tan shorts and black and white Wapello County Jail shirt.  Mendoza has a Bulldog tattoo on his right forearm.


This criminal charge is an accusation and the Defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
