The Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont softball team is playing in its second-ever state tournament this week, but the #5 Rockets looked like seasoned veterans Tuesday, knocking off #15 Alburnett 5-1 in the Class 2A quarterfinals.
The Rockets jumped on Alburnett early, scoring four runs on five hits in the top of the first inning. Nataliah Hopkins, Claire Jager, Sadie Baugher and Rachel Maloy each had an RBI hit in the opening frame, establishing a lead that EBF would not relinquish.
Hopkins (24-4) made the lead stand up, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out seven for the complete-game victory. Alburnett scored its only run in the third inning, while the Rockets added an unearned run in the sixth for the final tally.
EBF advances to the semifinals on Thursday at 11am. The Rockets face top-ranked Highland, which dispatched Saint Ansgar 5-0 in the quarterfinals.
