Des Moines Man Accused of Exploiting Ottumwa Boys

A Des Moines man faces charges of sexually exploiting two Ottumwa boys last year.

Matthew Mason was arrested in the state’s capital city on Monday. He faces two charges of sexual exploitation of a minor for causing them to engage in a sexual act.

According to the criminal complaints, Mason first contacted a 12-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy through an internet video game. Over the course of several months in 2019, the 24-year-old Mason befriended the boys, exchanged phone numbers with them, and eventually encouraged both of them to send nude photographs of themselves to him. The offenses apparently happened at separate times; court documents say one of the offenses happened in February of last year, and the other in June.

Warrants for Mason’s arrest were first issued in November. He was taken from Des Moines to the Wapello County jail after his arrest, where he is awaiting his first court appearance.

As a reminder, a criminal charge is only an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
