David Fisher


David Lee Fisher, 72, of Blakesburg, died November 17, 2019 at Monroe County Health Center.

He was born November 21, 1946 in Ottumwa to Russell and Margaret Haff Fisher.  After his mother died, his father married Mary Utteraback who raised him.  He married Gwendolyn Kay Richardson on May 24, 1968.

Growing up in rural Albia, Dave served 2 years with the U.S. Army 101st Airborne in Vietnam.  He was wounded in action and received a Purple Heart.

He worked as a pipe welder for a short time and drove a semi-truck for 30 years for others as well as owned and operated his own truck.  Dave team drove with his wife for 15 years.  After his retirement, he helped his generic son-in-law at Deran’s Towing.

He was a member of Howard Cessna American Legion Post #136 in Albia, and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars, ABATE District #14, D.A.V., Vietnam Veterans and Pipefitters Union Local #25.

Surviving is his wife, Gwen; 2 daughters, Dianna Fisher (Deran) of Ottumwa and Denise Owens of Centerville; 4 grandchildren, David, Alisha, Jonathan and Michael; 8 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Paul Post of Blakesburg and Donald Fisher of Ottumwa and his dogs, Joey and Bo.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday.  His body will be cremated after the visitation.

Graveside services and inurnment will be 4 p.m. Thursday, on his birthday (which he considered a national holiday) at the Blakesburg Cemetery with military honors by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.

Memorials may be made to the Welcome Home Soldier Monument in Albia.
