Coulter punches ticket to State, Ottumwa boys and girls 7th at XC Qualifying Meet

PLEASANT HILL, IA – On a cloudy, cool late-October day, the Ottumwa boys and girls cross country teams laced up their running shoes with the season on the line at the Class 4A State Qualifying Meet hosted by Southeast Polk High School in Pleasant Hill. A top three overall finish by either team, or any individual Bulldog placing in the top 15 of the standings would result in a trip to the State Meet next week in Fort Dodge.

At the end of the five kilometer races, one Ottumwa runner had achieved the ultimate goal of punching their ticket to State: Senior Meghan Coulter. It was a late surge from Coulter that pushed her into the top 15 of the individual standings with a time of 20:37.2. At the end of the first mile, Coulter was in 25th, the second, 19th. By the time she crossed the finish line, however, the senior had worked her way up to ninth. She will represent Ottumwa next Friday, October 30, at the Class 4A State Meet at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

In the boys race, junior Asa Canny just missed the top 15, placing 19th with a time of 17:32.8. Both boys and girls teams finished seventh in the team standings.
