City Issues Yard Waste Reminder For Storm Clean Up

City officials have released some guidelines and other reminders for residents cleaning up after Monday’s powerful storm.

Residents with a few downed branches can place those items out for the weekly curbside waste collection. Brush and tree limbs must be properly prepared in order to be collected curbside. Residents are advised to follow the “3-3-50” rule; meaning limbs under three inches in diameter, cut into lengths of no more than three feet and tied into bundles no more than fifty pounds. Leafy debris and sticks may be disposed of in any compostable bag with a $1.00 green yard waste tag.

Yard waste should be placed at the curb by 4 a.m. to ensure collection and may not be disposed of with the general trash. Curbside yard waste pickup south of the Des Moines River is on Tuesdays; collection north of the river is on Thursdays. Residents may also dispose of all sizes of yard waste for no charge at the Ottumwa/Wapello Landfill. The landfill is open 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7:00 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
