City Council approves trail project

The proposed Pedestrian Trail Corridor to be located under highway 34 is a step closer to reality following Tuesday’s city council meeting.

The council approved a resolution authorizing and delivery of a CAT agreement for the project. The Wapello County Trails council applied for and was awarded a Community Attraction and Tourism grant administered by Vision Iowa in the amount of 125-thousand dollars. This action will allow for the construction of a safe pedestrian corridor under highway 34 by connecting the North Trail system in Wayside Park area to the South Trail system in Ottumwa Park.

The project will include lighting and a camera system.

Also during Tuesday’s meeting, the city council approved a resolution awarding a contract for the Jefferson Street Parking lot improvements.

The project consists of improvement to the parking lot including sewer repairs. The Legacy Foundation has agreed to fully fund this project to the tune of 475-thousand dollars plus the improvements made to the alley adjacent to the parking lot.

The low bidder for the project was JDM Contracting Company of West Point, Iowa after they submitted the best bid price of 324-thousand, 113-dollars.
