By Aaryn Frazier, December 07, 2018

Applications are open for the seventh year of the Ottumwa Police Department’s Citizen’s Police Academy will be on Monday’s during February and March.

Police Chief Tom McAndrew said this program allows members of the community to learn about the activities of the Ottumwa Police Department.

“This is usually a real eye opening experience for the participants.  Most people have no real idea what their police department does on a daily basis,” McAndrew said. “People are usually hesitant to dedicate the time to this program however each year we hear from  those who attend the class that they would like to have just a few more classes.”

He also told Ottumwa Radio the academy has proven to be a great community outreach program.

The academy consists of eight classes held on Monday’s from 6-9 p.m. during February and March. Meals are served each class night. Applications can be found on the city website under the police department tab. They have to be submitted by mail or hand-delivered by 4 p.m. Thursday, December 27, 2019.
