Centerville planning full day of events for RAGBRAI

It’s now less than three weeks until the big day, when The Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI®) comes to Centerville on Wednesday, July 27

The RAGBRAI Centerville group has been hard at work with preparations for the event, and have finalized the day’s entertainment schedule. The full day of entertainment will include performances by dance and musical acts, and also feature a family fun zone on the Historic Centerville Square District.

There will be two stages set up on the Centerville square — both inside of a large beverage garden on the south-side of the square. Simon Estes Auditorium at Centerville High School will also be utilized. There is no entry charge for any of the entertainment.
The main performing act will be Hairball, which will take the stage at 9:30 p.m. on July 27. Their stage will be set-up on Main Street on the south side of the square.

Leading up to their performance, though, is an afternoon of entertainment that expands into the evening on the Michelob stage, which will be located in front of the Centerville-Rathbun Lake Area Chamber of Commerce building on the southwest corner of the square.

The Dance X-pressions studio will perform on the stage at 2 p.m. to kick things off. They will be followed by Buffy’s Dance Studio at 3 p.m.

At 4 p.m., The Variety Group will give away new bikes to area winners as part of a promotion that provides new bikes, helmets and locks to children who have never had their own bike.

At 5 p.m., Lucas Bebe will take the stage, followed by country artist John Stone at 6 p.m. to lead into Hairball’s pyrotechnic-filled performance of classic rock hits.

There will be two musical acts at Simon Estes Auditorium at Centerville High School — the Air Force Band at 6 p.m. followed by Christian rock group We Are Vessel at 8:45 p.m.

The Family Fun Zone will be located on the northwest corner of the square and will be open from 1-8 p.m. on July 27. The zone will include many family-friendly activities, such as human foosball, a NASCAR simulator and Laura Ernst Human Extortionist.

The Majestic movie theatre will be showing movies from 1-8 p.m., including the titles of Wizard of Oz, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure and Breaking Away.

RAGBRAI, The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, is an annual seven-day bicycle ride across the state. Heading into its 44th year, RAGBRAI is the oldest, largest and longest bicycle touring event in the world. This year’s ride takes place July 24-30, 2016 and will be a southern swing through the state. This year’s RAGBRAI begins in Glenwood and then will make overnight stops in Shenandoah, Creston, Leon, Centerville, Ottumwa and Washington before ending in Muscatine.

It will be the first and only time since 1981 that Centerville has hosted RAGBRAI riders for an overnight stay. Centerville was a pass-through town in 1992 and 2003. Centerville is a town of 5,448 citizens, and is home to famous opera singer Simon Estes and former Iowa Gov. Francis Drake, who founded Drake University.

Centerville’s RAGBRAI Committee will graciously host a safe, fun and lively RAGBRAI event in order to help riders and visitors  find their way to the best of what Centerville has to offer, ensuring that they will leave with fond memories and return to Appanoose County in the future.
