For the second year in a row, a Cardinal student’s piece of art will be put on display in Washington D.C.

The Cardinal Community School District announced Annika Hicks’ winning piece Kgerald was a winner in the 2022 Congressional Art Competition. Hicks and the other congressional winners will be invited to the nation’s capital this summer for a reception to congratulate the students on their achievements.

Kgerald is a watercolor painting of a koi fish and Hicks says it was one of the first times she used watercolor in her art.

“I had seen a lot of videos online of people working in watercolor and I thought it looked like fun. I hadn’t really worked in watercolor seriously before, just little things like in elementary school art classes, so I
wanted to give it a try!”Cardinal student and 2022 Congressional Art Competition winner Annika Hicks

Each spring, the U.S. House of Representatives holds a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. The contest has taken in the entries of more than 650,000 high school students since the competition began in 1982.

The winning pieces are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol.
