Disaster was barely averted on Ottumwa’s south side Thursday afternoon. In yet another car VS building collision in Ottumwa, a family’s home is struck by sliding car. The crash happened at around 4PM at the intersection of Boone and Sheridan. Damage appeared to be confined to a small deck in the front of the home and a crack in the home’s foundation. KBIZ contacted the Ottumwa Fire Department who reported that no-one was transported to the hospital.
Slick roads and a failure to slow down may have contributed to the accident. Witnesses report that there was at least one child in the car, and that the driver of the car was arrested. Calls to the Ottumwa Police Department have not been returned.
The Iowa Department of Transportation has the following winter driving tips:
- Always maintain a reasonable speed and safe following distance from the vehicle in front of you. Winter road conditions often result in longer stopping distances and reduced visibility
- Avoid using cruise control in winter driving conditions. You need to be in control of your car when accelerating based on road conditions
- If your car is equipped with anti-lock brakes, understand how to use them and what to expect when they are used.
