A boil order has been issued for the town of Blakesburg following a water main break, according to the Wapello County Emergency Management Coordinator.

Tim Richmond recommends that Blakesburg citizens do not drink tap water without boiling it first. Boiling kills bacteria and organisms that may be in the water. Water that is boiled for one minute or bottled water is safe for drinking, making ice, and food preparation.

Tap water can still be used for bathing and other similar purposes, according to Richmond.

When water service is restored, the water may be cloudy once it comes out of the tap. After waiting a few moments, Richmond says the water should return to its familiar clear state.

When the system has been repaired, repressurized, and bacteria samples will be collected. This advisory is a precaution until bacterial sample results are available. Richmond says the public will be notified when the results are available and the advisory is lifted.
