Bob Thomas

ELDON – Robert Carl Thomas, 88, of Eldon, died at 11:27 a.m. December 29, 2017 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City surrounded by his family.  

He was born July 26, 1929 at The Red House southwest of Eldon to Carl and Lena Lynch Thomas.  He married Iola Hemm October 28, 1950. They made their home in the Eldon area for the past 67 years.   

Bob grew up with his three brothers and two sisters, on his parent’s farm south of Eldon where he learned the meaning of hard work at an early age.  He received an 8th grade education at the Fiedler School just west of his family farm.  Combining his formal education with lessons learned at home he never was one to shy away from hard work.  He grew to manhood farming the land that was his grandfather’s original homestead.  

In addition to farming, he worked at the Eldon Elevator, for the city of Eldon and as a Grain Inspector for the USDA.  

He was a member of Living Hope Bible Church.  

Bob enjoyed baking pies and driving out to the farm to put up hay or check his cattle.  His most treasured moments were spent with his loving wife and his daughters and most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He also enjoyed spending time with his buddy, Josh Durflinger.    

Surviving is his wife, Iola; four daughters, Joyce Miller of Batavia and Judy (David) Wemer of Ottumwa, long lost twin daughters, Dana of Colorado and Debra of Arizona; 5 grandchildren, Alex Major, Amy (John) Conrad, Heather Sylvis, Daniel (Justine) Miller and Kerri (Shafer) Miller; 15 great grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Everly of Bloomfield.  

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bill, Stanley and Stuart Thomas; a sister, Alice Thomas; a brother-in-law and three sisters-in-law.   

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Living Hope Bible Church with Pastors Mark Clark and David Albert officiating.  Private burial will be in Fiedler Cemetery.  Family graveside services will be at a later date.  

Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to the service at the church.  

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Living Hope Bible Church.  

Reece Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
