Blackbird Releases Statement, Vows Resolution to Current Conflict

By Ellis Codjoe, November 16, 2018

In the opening sentence of her statement, Blackbird Investment’s Marketing Director Rachel Wegmann admitted that the future site of St. Joseph’s Square is currently an “eyesore.”

Demolition of St. Joseph Hospital has ground to a halt as a contractor dispute arose. The site hasn’t been touched for over four months.

Ottumwa Mayor Tom Lazio appeared on Dialogue on KBIZ in August and told Ottumwa Radio News that he hoped for a resolution “soon.” Such hopes evaporated as St. Joseph Hospital remains unoccupied and unattended.

Here is the entirety of Wegmann’s statement:

“The partial demolition and delay of construction at the former St. Joseph Hospital site has created an eyesore and uncertainty for the citizens of Ottumwa. We want you to know we are actively working towards a contract resolution to restart the halted progress on this project. Given the legal nature of this matter, we are not able to communicate in detail as much as we believe the people of Ottumwa deserve. Please know we hear you, we are committed to Ottumwa, and we will provide the city a beautiful housing community. After we have reached a solution, we will communicate an updated timeline of progress moving forward.”
