Betty Jean (“Tootie”) Johnston Everhart, 79, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2022, in West Des Moines, IA. She was the beloved wife of Tracy Glen Everhart Sr., and the dear daughter of Frederick and Edna Lucille Johnston. Betty is survived by her husband; sons Tracy Glen Everhart Jr. and wife Mary Jo of Foristell, MO, and John Frederick Everhart and wife Sharon of East Brunswick, NJ; and grandchildren Robert Everhart of Lake Worth, TX, Julianna Everhart of Foristell, MO, Andrew Everhart of Warrensburg, MO, Kristin Albaugh of Waxhaw, NC, Allison LaPointe of Brandon, FL, and Sarah Everhart of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, Violet, Tilly, Clara, Margo, Brooklyn, Judah and Sage. Also surviving are two sisters from Eddyville, IA, Phyllis Herrington and Barbara Allgood, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers John Eugene Johnston and Robert Frederick Johnston.

Betty was born August 7, 1942, in Eddyville, IA, and graduated from Eddyville High School in 1960 in the last class to graduate from the old building. She attended Ottumwa School of Beauty for a short time and married her sweetheart, Glen, January 14, 1961. They moved to Cedar Rapids, where she worked for Collins Radio Co. in the microfilm department. Betty and Glen also lived in West Branch, Omaha, Burlington, St. Charles, MO, and West Des Moines. While in St. Charles, she attended nursing school, becoming an RN and working at St. Joseph Hospital and later at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, becoming a manager on 7 South.

Betty was a ray of sunshine, bringing happiness into many patients’ and families’ lives. She was a devout Christian, attending church regularly and always involved. She loved children – not only her own but others’ as well. She was an excellent student, always working to excel. She played 6-on-6 basketball and loved music, playing the recorder, French horn and piano.

She and Glen were married over 61 years and loved each other deeply.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. at New Hope Assembly of God, 4425 70th Street, Urbandale, IA, on Monday, May 16. Funeral services will be held at New Hope at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 17. The interment and graveside service will follow at Highland Cemetery in Eddyville at 3 p.m. Bates Funeral Chapel of Oskaloosa, Iowa is in charge of services.

Memorial donations may be made to New Hope Assembly of God or the Alzheimer’s Association.
