Barbara Jeanne Merringer, 95, formerly of Ottumwa, died at 10:07 p.m. December 15, 2022 at Monroe County Hospital.

She was born March 8, 1927 in Mt. Pleasant, IA. She married Jack Merringer September 11, 1949 and he preceded her in death October 16, 1990.

A graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, she attended Iowa Wesleyan University for three years.

She had worked for Martin Marietta while living in Englewood, CO. Returning to Ottumwa, she worked as a secretary for Dr. Donovan and Dr. Roush from 1969 to 1976.

She was a 60-year member of Wesley United Methodist Church where she belonged to Peace Circle. She was also a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, recently celebrating 75 years of membership and was a member and Past Worthy Matron of International Order of the Rainbow Girls.

Surviving is her son, John Merringer of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Mike Merringer, Chris Merringer, Allison Merringer, Joshua Merringer-Mrvos, Sara Hamm-Whitlow and Megan Merringer; five great grandchildren who referred to her as “G.G.”; two great-great grandchildren; and her cat, Baby.

She was preceded in death by her birth parents, Milo Claire and Marie Hoover Claire; her adopted parents, Fred Hedlund and Mary Claire Hedlund; a son, Gary Merringer; a daughter, Beth Anne Hamm Robinson; a daughter-in-law, Christine Merringer.

Visitation will be open after 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 20th at Reece Funeral Home with her family present to greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 21st at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Altmaier officiating. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery.

In honor of Barb’s daughter, memorials may be made to Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.
