Authorities Confirm Sunday Fire Being Treated as Suspicious

By Ellis Codjoe, November 13, 2017

Ottumwa firefighters now say that a structure fire on South Street Sunday afternoon is being treated as a suspicious fire.

Ottumwa Firefighters were called to the home in the 1100 block of South Street at approximately 3:10 Sunday.

Ottumwa Fire Chief Tony Miller fell short of declaring the fire as Arson, saying that designation may come following the full investigation. “There were some circumstances that caused us to look at this more closely,” Miller said.

Deputy Chief Cory Benge says he found “multiple points of origin” when investigating the fire, which leads him to suspect Arson was the cause.

A neighbor called 911, Sunday, to report the home was filled with smoke and flames in the attic. The home was under renovation at the time of the fire, though nobody was inside when firefighters arrived.

The fire remains under investigation.
