The Ottumwa Community School District initiated a soft lockdown for its buildings on Monday morning after a “concerning” social media post was made which resulted in the arrest of a student in a southwest Iowa district.
According to an email to staff, the social media post mentioned four students with one student specifically listing three elementary school buildings in the Ottumwa district which raised the concern of administrators.
Ottumwa Schools instituted a soft lockdown on all its buildings and instructed staff to keep students inside.
It was later determined the social media post originated from a student at Atlantic Middle School who was arrested. The email states a student from Ottumwa Christian School shared the video with four Ottumwa Schools students.
Ottumwa Community School District emphasized that there is no threat to any school or building and the soft lockdown was enacted as a precaution.
According to the email, the soft lockdown was lifted late Monday morning and all activities returned to normal.
