An Ottumwa woman allegedly used her mother-in-law’s identification to purchase lottery tickets, according to the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office.
43-year-old Ammy Nelson, also known as Ammy Dennison, was charged with Theft in the First Degree and one count of Identity Theft over $10,000, each are class C felonies.
Between January and July of 2023, court records say Nelson stole her mother-in-laws identity to illegally transfer $84,025.99 in U.S. currency into her bank account. Authorities say Nelson used $40,363 to buy Iowa lottery tickets over a six month period.
On August 26, 2024, according to the District Court of Jefferson County, Nelson was sentenced to a pair of 10 year indeterminate sentences in the Iowa Correctional Institute for Women in Mitchellville.
Nelson is ordered to pay restitution to the victim in the amount she stole, and a no contact order was filed.
