Jon R Wilson of Monroe, Iowa, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2024 at Pella

Regional Hospital in Pella, Iowa.

Jon was born July 26,1943, the son of Gavin (Guy) W. Wilson and Margaret Jean Wilson. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1961 and attended college for three years. He married Lana Munson on July 17, 1964. He worked at Vernon Company in Newton, Iowa as a commercial artist until being accepted into the Iowa Highway Patrol in 1966. Jon worked his way through the ranks, requiring several moves to different cities, and retired from the Iowa State Patrol in 1999 as Chief. He loved every day of his career – it wasn’t just a job to him. Another great love was being a member of the Monroe Fire & Rescue for over 30 years.

Jon is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lana R. Wilson; son Robert Jon (Cindy) Wilson of Monroe, Iowa; son Sean Eric (Amy) Wilson of Monroe, Iowa; grandson Gavin Wilson of Monroe; granddaughter Morgan (Thomas) Van Haaften of Monroe; granddaughter Lainy (Travis) Curry of Prairie City; twin grandsons Brody & Connor Wilson of Monroe. Also surviving are 3 great-grandchildren: Carly Steenhoek, Wilson Steenhoek, and Munson Curry; a brother Fred Wilson of Omaha, Nebraska; a sister Ann DeGrado of Newton; a sister-in-law Judy Wilson of Monroe; a brother-in-law Dr. Dennis (Lynn) Munson of St. Louis, Missouri, along with many nieces and nephews.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Carl Wilson, his father and mother-in- law, James and Alberta Munson.

Memorial services will be held at the Monroe United Methodist Church on Friday, August 30, at 10:30 AM. Visitation will also be at the church on Thursday, August 29, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s, Shriners’ Children’s Hospital, and the Animal Rescue League of Des Moines, IA.
