Thomas Lynch


Thomas Edward Lynch, fondly remembered as Tommy or Tom, was born on June 8, 1951, in Albia, Iowa, and lived a spirited and resilient life until his passing on July 7, 2024. The sixth of nine children born to John and Winnifred (Coughlin) Lynch, Thomas spent his early years on his family’s farm in Georgetown/Melrose, Iowa, absorbing the values of hard work and family unity that would guide him throughout his life. Following his graduation from Albia High School in 1969, his resilient spirit led him to serve his country by joining The United States Marines during Vietnam, an experience which shaped his character in profound ways.

Upon returning to civilian life, Thomas embarked on a career with the BNSF railroad for five years before dedicating his skills to becoming a bricklayer. He took great pride in his work, contributing to the construction of homes and storefronts, and leaving an enduring legacy in the structures he helped build. Even after retiring, Thomas maintained a tireless work ethic, pouring his energy into his beloved garden. His tomatoes were the talk of Monroe County, a testament to his meticulous care and dedication.

Beyond his professional life and hobbies, Thomas was an ardent supporter of the Iowa Hawkeyes, reveling in both football and basketball seasons. His love for the outdoors extended beyond his garden into the wilds of Iowa, where he treasured mushroom hunting. With a cold Budweiser in hand, Thomas was known to share stories of his adventures, his laughter echoing throughout the county. Although he never married, Thomas’ life was filled with the love of many friends.

He is survived by three siblings; Mary Ann (Larry) Fahrenkrug, Kay (Daryl) Allison, Michael (Teri) Lynch, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, John F. and Winnifred E. Lynch; five siblings, Helen Marie Lynch, Shirley Livengood, John Lynch, William “Bill” Lynch, Winnifred “Winni” Haney.

A Mass of Christian Burial will held at 11:00 a.m., Wedesday, July 31, 2024 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Georgetown with Father Isaac Essel officiating. Visitation will also be held at the church on Wednesday from 10 – 11 a.m., with family present. Inurnment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Georgetown with military rites conducted by the American Legion of Albia, Melrose, & Lovilia. Memorials have been established to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Georgetown.

Thomas Lynch was a unique soul, whose spirit and resilience left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
