Steve Smith, 61, of Oskaloosa, passed away at his home on Monday, July 8, 2024.

Stephen Edward Smith, son of Marvin Eugene and Donna Marie (Ponto) Smith, was born May 9, 1963, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Steve was a 1981 graduate of Oskaloosa High School and then began working for Marv Smith Signs. In 1988, Steve continued his education at Indian Hills Community College, where he studied Automotive Technology. He graduated with Honors in 1990 with an Associate Degree in Applied Science. He has worked as a Master Technician at Ulrich Motors in Pella for the last 33 years.

Steve married Margaret Louise Davis, the love of his life, on September 4, 2009, at home in their backyard. That event foretold many enjoyable times to come in that very place. Together, they created a backyard bird sanctuary where they could bird watch right outside their back door. Steve also built many planters that occupy their deck, creating a perfect space for quiet, solace, and respite from a hectic day. But what is a deck without a grill? Steve was also a grill master known for his ribs, steaks, and smoked meats – the deck was where many happy and delicious meals were served to family and friends.

Steve considered Margaret his true soulmate and best friend. His family was always his priority, and he cherished time with them, especially his grandchildren. Steve was an avid Hawkeye Football fan. He enjoyed hunting morel mushrooms, classic cars, and collecting Hot Wheels Cars. Steve was baptized in Jesus’ Name and gave his life to the Lord in 1988; he was a member of the Lighthouse Apostolic Church.
His family includes his wife, Margaret; his son, Daniel Stephen (Kisha) Smith of Bettendorf; two grandchildren, Aria and Everett; his mother, Donna Smith of Oskaloosa; his siblings: David Smith of Oskaloosa, Linda Smith of Oskaloosa, and Debbie Bassett of Des Moines; a step-son, Austin (Michelle) Bonnema of Sandy, Utah and their children: Lucy, Tessa, and Lawson; a step-son, Aaron (Katie) Bonnema of Stilwell, Kansas and their children: Caleb and Connor; two brothers-in-law: Paul (Terri) Davis and Dale (Steff) Davis, both of Knoxville; several nieces and nephews; and several special aunts, uncles and cousins; and Margaret’s extended family who provided loving support during these last difficult months.

In addition to his father, Marv, Steve was preceded in death by a brother, Danny.

Funeral services for Steve will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 13, 2024, at Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Rev. Adrian Wolfe of Lighthouse Apostolic Church officiating. After the funeral services, the interment will occur at Forest Cemetery in the St. Mary’s section. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m., Friday, July 12, 2024, with the family present to greet friends from 4-6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Lifehouse Apostolic Church or the Mahaska Health Hospice Serenity House.
