Peggy Ann Humiston McFarland, 68, of Ottumwa, died at 11:30 p.m. Friday, April 14, 2023 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City after an 8 month battle with Cervical Cancer.

She was born December 17, 1954 in Burlington to Harry Lee and Mary Ann Thimmesch Humiston. Peggy married Rick D. McFarland on March 18, 1978.

A 1973 graduate of Wapello Sr. High School, Peggy attended Southeastern Community College and the University of Iowa where she graduated with a Marketing Degree with an emphasis in accounting. Through the years she had worked for Kresge’s Department Store as an assistant manager, Payroll Clerk at Hormel, 10 years in the office at Elliott Oil and for 19 years as an Accountant College Cashier at Indian Hills Community College where she retired in 2018.

Peggy was involved with various community groups including, Ottumwa Talented and Gifted, Race for the Cure and Iowa Junior Miss. She enjoyed gardening, decorating her house for Christmas, going shopping and being part of “TNG” (Tuesday Night Group). Peggy and Rick enjoyed traveling to Daytona Beach with their friends, Mike and Cecile Van Winkle. She was a proud almost 8 year survivor of breast cancer. Peggy was an active member of Davis Street Christian Church, currently serving as the church treasurer, memorial committee chair and loved singing soprano in the choir. She enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren participate in various events over the years.

Surviving is her husband, Rick; daughters, Kara McFarland and Taren (Matt) Ferguson, both of Ottumwa; grandchildren Lexi, Maya, Jayme and Madison; her mother, Mary Ann Humiston of Wapello; two brothers, Jim (Sue) Humiston of Wapello and Dave (Susan) Humiston of Salado, TX; brothers-in-law, Randy (Joan) McFarland and Tim McFarland both of Bettendorf; along with numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her father, Harry Humiston.

Visitation will be open after 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 18th at Reece Funeral Home with her family present to greet friends from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 19th at Davis Street Christian Church with Rev. James H. Wakelin officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Davis Street Christian Church or Heartland Humane Society.
