Gary L. Hagedon, 67, of Ottumwa died October 31, 2022 at his home doing what he loved best, working outside in the garden.

Gary was born September 19, 1955 in Ottumwa to Loren and Margaret Rudd Hagedon. He married Brenda Davis January 27, 1985.

Gary was a 1973 graduate of Ottumwa High School, and graduated from Northeast Missouri State University (Truman State University) with a degree in horticulture and botany. One summer spent working in Yellowstone through his undergraduate years always stood out to him, where he recalled hiking hundreds of miles of trails, tubing down white-water rapids and even close encounters with grizzly bears. Gary loved to draw, so he went back for more classes in drafting and ended up working as a Landscape designer for the Green Thumbers in Davenport (1984 – 1988) and Kellor and Kellor Landscaping in Muscatine (1988 – 1996).

In the fall of 1996, the family moved back to Ottumwa, and Gary started his own landscape company called Integrity Landscaping. In the winter months he worked part-time at the Ottumwa Waterworks, which ended up turning into a full-time job when he hung up landscaping in the fall of 2007. He really looked forward to retiring and enjoyed the 2 years of working in the yard and growing plants in his greenhouse. He got back into woodworking and made several toys and projects for his grandson, Nolan Gary Hagedon. Being “Pop” was his favorite job of all.

Gary was a member of Davis Street Christian Church where he served as an Elder, Deacon and in various other roles. He was a member of the Ottumwa Woodworkers League and a volunteer for The Lord’s Cupboard.

Surviving is his wife of 37 years, Brenda; their children, Jordan (Sierra) and grandson, Nolan of Traer, IA, and Joseph (McKenna) of Newton, IA; sisters, Sharon (Greg) Bowman and Marsha (Jim) Hubbell both of Ottumwa, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
