Steve Walters, 74, of Oskaloosa, passed away Tuesday evening, October 25, 2022, at the Cottages in Pella.
Steven Jason Walters, son of Jesse Jason and Dorthy Jean (Bolton) Walters, was born on January 7, 1948, at Mercy Hospital in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Steve was born a hard worker, and his first job was delivering newspapers as a young boy. He attended the Bussey Elementary School, was a 1966 graduate of Twin Cedars High School, and attended Centerville College. Steve met the love of his life, Jacqueline Monica Toigo, at a young age. By delivering newspapers and working at the Bolton Grocery in Bussey, he acquired enough money to buy Jacque an engagement ring. They married at the Bussey Methodist Church on October 29, 1966. After living in various locations around Iowa, they settled permanently in Oskaloosa in 1971, where they raised their two sons.
Steve operated heavy equipment for a time and then managed Thorp Finance for eleven years. His early experiences working as a farm hand and for his father’s concrete business, J.W. Concrete, helped him launch Stevens Concrete Limited in 1979. His jobs included numerous community improvement projects, building trade areas, commercial concrete, steel buildings, sewer work, and a sod farm. He was also the owner of Heartland Center, held a seat for many years as a bank board member at Bank Iowa, and was a licensed real estate agent. He built substantial structures and built both of his family homes in Oskaloosa. He also helped many other businesses with their expansion projects. Steve’s passion for life was to help others, and he always had ample time to spare to visit with his many friends and customers throughout his life. Steve will always be known as a community servant, and his work was imperative for the ease of daily life for numerous communities. Creating concrete benches and placing them around various community locations gave him great joy.
Steve’s true calling was to love his family and friends and always be there to assist in any way necessary. Cooking, traveling, scuba diving, and flying his plane brought him great happiness. He found much peace in farming and hiking his rural property. His children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments brought his heart immense joy, and the times spent with them were his most cherished moments.
Steve’s family includes his wife of 56 years, Jacque Walters; sons: Shawn (Stephanie) Walters of Grinnell and Chad (Tara) Walters of Oskaloosa; eight grandchildren: Jorie, Aubrey, Jace, Shayna, Callie, Caitlyn, Jaxon, and Dawson, and his mother, Dorothy. Steve is also survived by his siblings: Nancy (Jim) Sparks of Oskaloosa, Susan (Bob) Gullion of Pleasant Hill, and Todd (Melody) Walters of Knoxville.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, Jesse Walters.
A visitation for Steve will begin after 2 p.m., Friday, October 28, 2022, at Langkamp Funeral Chapel & Crematory; the family will greet visitors from 4-6 p.m. As was his wish, Steve’s body has been cremated, and the private burial of his ashes will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery near Lovilia, Iowa. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
