Larry Dwain Swaim, 86 of Fairfield, passed away on Thursday, Oct 20, 2022, at Jefferson County Health Center.

Larry was born on February 16, 1936, near Eldon, IA to John Earl & Mavern Louise (Klicker) Swaim.  He graduated from Milton High School in 1954.  Larry was united in marriage to Nancy Louise Hogan on October 28, 1956, at the Methodist Church in Packwood, IA.  They celebrated their 65th anniversary last year.

Larry worked at the Council Bluffs mail terminal for 3 years before transferring out on the railway post office.  He sorted mail as the train traveled between Council Bluffs & Chicago, picking up and delivering mail to the towns in between.  In the mid 1960’s, Larry began working in the Fairfield Post Office, first as a clerk and then as a city carrier.  His postal career spanned 42 years.  He also enjoyed the farm and raised registered Angus cattle for many years, retiring in 2021.

Larry served as chairman of the board of directors for Jefferson County Community Credit Union and SE Iowa Chapter of Credit Unions for several years.  He belonged to the Jefferson County Cattlemen, Iowa Angus Association, and the First United Methodist Church in Fairfield.  Larry enjoyed carpentry, helping to build 2 homes for his family as well as others, and he enjoyed country music and attending Fan Fair in Nashville, TN.

He is survived by his wife Nancy, daughters Sherry (Brian) Taglauer & Stacey Swaim of Fairfield, grandchildren Courtney (Michael) Burkhalter of Fairfield, Whitney (Ben) Hein of Monticello, Brandon (Brianna) Taglauer of Lockridge, and 3 great-granddaughters Lainey Hein, Brinley & Bristol Taglauer.  He was proceeded in death by his parents John and Mavern and a brother, Jack Swaim of Dalton, NE.

A visitation will be held on Monday, October 31, 2022, from 5-7 p.m. and the funeral service will be at 10:30 am Tuesday, November 1 with Pastor Alan Mullikin officiating.  Both will be held at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield.  Burial of cremains will be at Batavia Cemetery, Batavia, IA.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Lord’s Cupboard of Fairfield or UI Macular Degeneration Research Fund. Cards and memorials can be mailed to Nancy Swaim at 2060 Libertyville Road, Fairfield, Iowa 52556.
