Berdina A. Metz age 97 of Fairfield, passed away Sunday, August 7, 2022, at Prestige Care Center. 

Graveside memorial service will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 24, 2022, at Evergreen Cemetery.

Family and friends can stop in to sign the register book from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Friday, September 23, 2022, at Behner Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Washington County and mailed to Renee Parcell, 1000 South 7th Street, Fairfield, Iowa 52556.

Berdina was born January 10, 1925, at 501 South 5th Street in Fairfield to Harry Albert and Laura Arizona (Edler) Knauss.  She married Lloyd H. Metz on July 7, 1943, at the First Christian Church parsonage.  Lloyd passed away November 29, 1991.

Berdina graduated from FHS class of 1943.  She stared working at Woolworth in 1941 and quit in 1946.  She went back to work at Woolworth until they closed in 1957.  Berdina then started working at Spurgeons and worked their until 1987 when she retired.  Berdina was known as the “Spurgeon lady”.   She decided to go back to work part time working at Crystal Forest till they closed and then worked part time at Fairfield Line Outlet Store.  

Berdina crocheted many Afghans for all her family.  Some of her other interests were doing word finds and watching Judge Judy.  Berdina collected Fiesta Ware and Salt & Pepper shakers.  She loved spending time with her family and sometimes she had to travel so she could spend time with those that lived away.  Berdina often joked about keeping them in line.  she was proud of her Indian heritage.

She will be missed by her children, Renee (Michael) Parcell, Kent (Diana) Metz and Jolene “Laura” (James) Johnson; 7 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Berdina was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Laura; husband, Lloyd; three brothers; and two sisters.
