Ottumwa Man Charged With Arson, Burglary

An Ottumwa man is facing charges stemming from a June auto theft.

According to a press release, on June 6th, 2022, at approximately 10:41 A.M., a concerned citizen called the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office and reported that he had found a recently burnt vehicle in a farm field near a residence on Sycamore Road. Deputies responded and processed the scene. Deputies believed the vehicle was a Ford Mustang, but no public vehicle identification numbers or license plates were present.

At approximately 1:05 P.M. that day the Ottumwa Police Department was dispatched to Vernon Street in Ottumwa to take a vehicle-theft report. The missing vehicle was a Ford Mustang and was reported to have been stolen during the overnight hours. The Sheriff’s Office was able to locate hidden VIN numbers on the burnt vehicle and positively identify it as the stolen vehicle.

Investigators with the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office and Ottumwa Police Department conducted a joint investigation and identified 25 year old Wesley Aaron Rupp of Ottumwa, as a suspect. Rupp was also identified as a suspect in an Ottumwa burglary from an an automobile and a fraud case as well. As a result of this investigation, Rupp has been charged with 2nd Degree Arson (D Felony), 2nd Degree Theft (D Felony), 3rd Degree Burglary – Theft From Automobile (Aggravated Misdemeanor), 3rd Degree Theft (Aggravated Misdemeanor) and seven counts of Unauthorized Use of Credit Cards (Aggravated Misdemeanors). Rupp is currently being held in the Monroe County Jail on an unrelated charge.
