71 Year Old Man Rescued From Des Moines River

An Oskaloosa man was rescued from a capsized canoe on Tuesday evening.

According to a press release, at around 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19, members of the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the Des Moines River in the southwest part of the county on a report of a capsized canoe. Personal belongings were also found floating in the water. Rescue boats from the Eddyville and Oskaloosa Fire Departments were dispatched and found a 71 year old man in the river near the 1300 block of River Road.

The man was taken to the Mahaska Health Partnership Hospital as a precaution. It is believed that his canoe capsized around 3:00 p.m. that day. The man was wearing a life jacket, which they credit for saving his life. The above named agencies were assisted in this rescue by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Mahaska County Dispatch Center.
