In a game that took three weeks to finish, extra innings were needed to determine a winner in Davis County’s non-conference game in Keokuk.

Miller Giesler was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the 9th inning, bringing home the winning run as Davis County fell to Keokuk 3-2.

The game was originally scheduled to be played on May 17, however, heavy rain halted play in the 3rd inning. The Mustangs and Chiefs resumed their matchup on Tuesday night with the score tied 1-1.

Keokuk took the lead in the bottom of the 3rd when Blake Chase hit a run-scoring single to make it 2-1.

A throwing error led to Davis County tying the game in the top of the 6th.

That unearned run was the only blemish on what was a sterling outing for Keokuk pitcher Blake Chase. The freshman pitched 7 innings and allowed 5 hits. He walked a batter and struck out 5 as he earned the win.

Davis County junior Justin Matheney was saddled with the loss. After getting the final out in the 8th inning, the junior lefty walked four batters in the 9th inning before exiting the game with the bases loaded. Sophomore Nolan Cremer hit Giesler to end the game.

Mustang hurler Presley Cantrell pitched well in relief. The freshman lasted 5.2 innings and allowed one run on six hits. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out three.

Davis County scored first on an RBI ground out by Dalton Reeves in the 1st inning. Keokuk tied it in the bottom of the frame with a sacrifice fly from Giesler.

Davis County (9-2) gets back into conference play Wednesday night as they will play host to Chariton.
