(Written by Jason Van Arkel) The Ottumwa softball team only held a lead for one inning in Monday night’s doubleheader, but it was enough for the Bulldogs to split their CIML Metro Conference doubleheader at Des Moines Lincoln.
OHS trailed 5-0 after one inning in the opener before rallying back, scoring three in the seventh to force extra innings and tacking on a run in the eighth to prevail 7-6. Lincoln kept the Bulldog offense in check in the nightcap, winning 6-2.
Ottumwa game one starter Ashlynn Sheets (6-3) settled down after her rough start, holding the Railsplitters scoreless for the final six innings. First baseman Sam Weeks drove in the tying run in the seventh with a 2-out RBI single, and right fielder Jordan Pauls plated the winning run with an 8th-inning sacrifice fly.
Amber Shotts went 4-for-4 with a walk and two RBI in game one, while also catching in Monday’s intense heat. Shotts hit a 2-run homer in game two, her third long ball of the season, but OHS could only muster five hits in the loss.
The Bulldogs now sit at 9-6 overall, and 4-2 in conference play after seeing their 7-game winning streak come to an end.
