Gladys Marie Sterk, 98, of Oskaloosa, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2022, at Mahaska Health Serenity House in Oskaloosa.
Gladys Marie Sterk, daughter of Ben and Jeanette (Vroom) Brower, was born September 23, 1923, in Mahaska County, Iowa. Gladys attended school in Oskaloosa. She was united in marriage to Peter Sterk on February 16, 1944, in Oskaloosa. They began their life together on a farm near Oskaloosa, where they remained until 1970. They moved to Des Moines, where Pete worked for Pioneer Seed; they then moved to Harrison, Arkansas, in 1983 and back to Oskaloosa in 1994. Gladys was a hostess in Harrison for several years and, upon returning to Oskaloosa, was a waitress at Elmhurst Country Club for several years. Gladys will always be remembered as a kind and gracious individual serving people. Gladys enjoyed spending time with family and friends as well as playing cards.
Gladys’s family includes her grandson: Robert Sterk of Hawaii; a granddaughter: Vanessa Sterk of Phoenix, AZ; one sister, Grace McFall of Penn Valley, CA; also several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband Peter, who died on January 30, 2002, she is preceded in death by two sons, Roger and Keith Sterk.
As was her wish, Gladys’s body has been cremated. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 12, 2022, at Forest Cemetery, with Rev. Molly Goodrich of the First Christian Church officiating. If attending the service, please meet at Langkamp Funeral Chapel at 1:30 p.m. a procession will depart for the cemetery at 1:45 p.m. Memorials may be made to Mahaska Foundation for the Hospice Serenity House.
