A central Iowa man is accused of borrowing a car last April and not returning the vehicle–which was later found wrecked and abandoned–to its owner.

25-year-old Marco Solorzano of Des Moines has been charged with operating without the owner’s consent, an aggravated misdemeanor.

Court records say on April 27th, 2021 Solorzano took possession of the vehicle after being granted the owner’s permission to borrow it but did not return it as promised.

Police say the owner, a resident of Ottumwa, was unable to make contact with Solorzano and at one point Solorzano’s family told the victim he was arrested by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office which turned out to be a lie.

According to court documents, Solorzano later told the victim that he crashed her vehicle but did not tell her where the car was. The vehicle was later found damaged and abandoned outside of Pella. Officials were able to find Solorzano’s identification inside the vehicle.

A warrant for Solorzano’s arrest was issued on May 21st, 2021 but he was in the Polk County Jail on a separate charge.

Solorzano was later arrested on April 1st, 2022, and transported to the Wapello County Jail. His bond has been set at $2,000.

Solorzano waived his preliminary hearing.
