More information has been released regarding a Tuesday shooting incident near Mt. Pleasant’s Iowa Wesleyan College.

According to a press release, at around 8:30 p.m. on April 12, the Mt. Pleasant Police Department responded to what was described as a large fight near West Broad and North Jackson Street. Officers were en route when dispatch informed them that gunshots had been reported.

The initial investigation determined that more than 20 people were involved in the fight. At some point during the brawl a handgun was displayed and fired, striking an 18 year old. That victim was transported to the hospital with minor wounds and was later released. Due to the incident’s proximity to Iowa Wesleyan University, a dorm was placed under lockdown.

Two suspects were identified with one being quickly taken into custody. The other was apprehended a short time later. Both were taken to the Henry County Jail on charges of Participating in a Riot, an Aggravated Misdemeanor. At this time there is no threat to public safety. The investigation is ongoing and a large amount of video footage has been turned in to investigators with further charges to be filed. The identities of the suspects have not been released at this time.
