Iowa’s highest court will not hear an appeal of two Fairfield teenagers accused of killing a teacher.
On Thursday, the Iowa Supreme Court declined applications filed by the attorneys for Jeremy Goodale, 17, and Willard Miller, 16, for discretionary review and interlocutory appeal.
A district court ruled in March that the public, including the media, will not be barred from upcoming hearings to determine if Goodale and Miller will be tried in juvenile court. Lawyers for Goodale and Miller argued that evidence revealed during the hearing would make it difficult for their clients to receive a fair trial.
Goodale and Miller have both requested to be tried as juveniles. Each teen faces charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit a forcible felony.
A court date to determine if Goodale and Miller will be tried as juveniles has not been scheduled.
Authorities say Goodale and Miller killed 66-year-old Nohema Graber during her daily walk in Chautaqua Park in Fairfield last November.
