Ottumwa Regional Health Center will be holding their DAISY Award ceremony honoring nurses next week.

The DAISY Foundation (an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System) is a non-profit organization, established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a relatively unknown but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill was the driving factor in establishing the foundation and the awards. Nurses may be nominated by patients, families, and colleagues and the award recipient is chosen by a committee at ORHC. Each honoree receives a certificate commending them as an “Extraordinary Nurse”, a DAISY Award pin, and a hand-carved statue known as “A Healer’s Touch”, crafted by members of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.

“We are proud to be among the healthcare organizations participating in The DAISY Award program. Nurses are heroes every day. It’s important that our nurses know their work is highly valued, and The DAISY Foundation provides a way for us to do this.”Lori Bailey, Chief Nursing Officer

The spring 2022 Celebration will occur on Friday, May 6th at 3:00 p.m. at Ottumwa Regional Health Center in the cafeteria. More information about the foundation can be found at DAISYfoundation.org.
