WATCH: No Injuries Following Car Fire in Rural Wapello County

By Ellis Codjoe, September 13, 2017

Members of the Wapello County Rural Volunteer Fire Department rushed to a report of a car on fire Wednesday afternoon.

Crews were notified at approximately 1:15 of a small SUV on fire on Cliffland Road approximately one mile from Ottumwa City Limits. Dispatchers told firefighters that a person was possibly still in the fully engulfed vehicle.

Wapello County Sheriff Deputies were first on scene and quickly determined that there was nobody inside the SUV, nor at the scene when deputies arrived.

Deputies contacted the Henry County Sheriff’s Department to make contact with the registered owner of the vehicle.

Scanner traffic indicates that the SUV broke down earlier in the day and was left on the side of the roadway.

Firefighters say the circumstances around the blaze are unusual but they are not yet sure if the fire will be considered suspicious.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported.
