By Ellis Codjoe, January 17, 2018

How many Canteen sandwiches can the world’s premier eaters down in just 10 minutes?

That question will be answered this summer when the Ottumwa Convention and Visitors Bureau will host the 2018 World Championship Canteen Sandwich Eating Contest sanctioned by the Major League Eating organization, the same organization that hosts the July 4th Coney Island hot dog eating contest in New York City every year.

The current record is 13 Canteens eaten in one hour. It was set in 2013, according to staff at the Canteen Lunch in the Alley.

The event is getting some serious attention across the country. Melissa Little, director of the Ottumwa Convention and Visitors Bureau informed the Ottumwa City Council that ESPN will even be in Ottumwa to cover the contest. You can find a video of Little’s presentation below.

Major League Eaters from near and far are encouraged to sign up for the chance to compete in the championship.

The prize purse will is $4,000, with the first place participant taking home $2,000.

The contest will take place at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, June 2nd at Central Park in downtown Ottumwa. Registration for the eating contest will open at 11:00 A.M. on April 2nd.
