WATCH: Firefighters Respond to a 2nd Structure Fire

By Ellis Codjoe, December 06, 2017

Ottumwa Firefighters responded to a second structure fire Wednesday at just after 6:00 P.M.

Crews were initially called to the scene in the 900 block of West 2nd street, directly across from Westgate towers, on reports of a smoke complaint. Before firefighters arrived, dispatchers informed them of a second and third caller reporting flames inside a home.

High winds quickly spread the fire which resulted in a collapse of much of the home’s roof.

Ottumwa Fire Chief Tony Miller says at least two residents were inside the apartment building when the fire started. Both made it out without any injuries.

Firefighters discovered a missing cat on the 2nd floor of the home, which somehow survived the inferno. Chief Miller says the cat found its way into an air pocket and was found, alive, nearly three hours after the fire was reported.

Miller couldn’t comment when asked about the cause of the fire, saying an investigation would be conducted.

The American Red Cross has been called in to assist the family.
