Rockets Denied in Bid for Softball Title

By jvanarkel, July 25, 2014

One way or another, the season was going to end on Friday for the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont softball team.  The Rockets were bidding for their first-ever state championship, but they came up short, falling 6-4 to Earlham in the Class 2A title game.

EBF had gotten to the final by taking an early lead and holding on in the semifinals against #1 Highland, but the #5 Rockets found themselves trailing early in the championship game.  #2 Earlham scored once in the first, once in the third and twice in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead.

The Rockets would not go away quietly, rallying for two runs in the fifth to cut the lead in half.  An Earlham run in the top of the sixth pushed the lead to 5-2, but Nataliah Hopkins’ two-run blast in the bottom of the sixth got EBF back within one.  Earlham scored an unearned run in the seventh, however, and while the Rockets had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh, they could not get any closer.

Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont earned its best-ever finish in school history by claiming the runner-up trophy.  The Rockets complete the season with a 26-6 record.
