Driver’s Name Released in Fatal Van Buren County Crash

By Nick Davis, July 17, 2017

The Iowa State Patrol has released the name of the driver killed in a rollover Friday in Van Buren County.

The Iowa State Patrol says 26 year old Mindy Johnson of Burlington was traveling eastbound on Highway 2 near Cantril when her 2005 Mercury Mariner left the roadway. Johnson was killed in the crash.

The patrol says the car made contact with the gravel shoulder which resulted in the driver over correcting and losing control. The mariner entered the north ditch and rolled into a corn field coming to a rest on its wheels.

Thirty-six year old April Maul of Burlington was also injured in the crash, as well as five unidentified children between the ages of three and eight.

Both adults were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash, though the State Patrol says that at least three of the five children were not.

The Mariner was carrying seven people including two adults. Information provided by Cars.com says the 2005 version of the Mariner had seating for only five people.

Three of the six surviving passengers were lifeflighted to the University of Iowa Hosipitals in Iowa City. The remaining passengers were transported to the Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
