Driver Killed, Five Children Injured in Van Buren County Crash

One person has died and several others were injured in a crash Friday in Van Buren County.

The crash was reported at around 2:30 Friday afternoon on Highway 2 near Cantril.

The Iowa State Patrol says a 2005 Mercury Mariner was traveling eastbound on highway 2 when the cars tires dropped onto the gravel shoulder. The driver over-corrected and lost control.

The Mariner rolled into a corn field eventually coming to a rest on it’s wheels.

The 26 year old female driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene.

Several passengers were treated for serious injuries. Three passengers, including a 36 year old and two 8 year olds were flown to the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

Three additional passengers including an additional 8 year old, a 3 year old and a 5 year old were transported to the Van Buren County Hospital via ambulance.

The patrol says that none of the eight year old victims were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Seatbelt use is not known for the remaining occupants of the car.

The Iowa State Patrol has not released the identities of any of those involved in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
