City responds to criticism about storm

By mlambrecht, April 28, 2014

City Information Coordinator Tom Rogers says despite the rumor mill………..all protocol was followed by the city in regards to Sunday’s severe weather event.

In a memo related this morning, Rogers says all protocol was followed to the letter and no one dropped the ball.

Rogers say the city received reports of tree and roof damage, but there were no reported severe injuries or loss of life.

Rogers says personnel from National Weather Service are in southeast Iowa today to survey the damage and plan to make a stop in Ottumwa.

The information officer noted Wapello County was under a Severe Thunder Storm Watch that was followed by a warning.

There was NO Tornado Watch or a warning issued for the city or the county.  No tornado warnings were disseminated by the electronic media inOttumwa.  Rogers says the out door warning system is activated through authorization of the National Weather Service or visual vertification from a credibly NWS weather spotter.
