Centerville Manufacturer Plans to Open Daycare for Employees, Public – Purchases Former School

By Press Release, August 02, 2017

(Advertisement) Centerville School Board Superintendent Tom Rubel announced today that the School Board has accepted an offer by a Lee Container affiliated company to purchase Garfield Elementary School.  The school building, located at 505 E. Walsh St. in Centerville, will be converted into a day care facility to serve the families of Lee Container employees, as well as Centerville area families. The day care center will be staffed and operated by Curious Kids, a Centerville day care operator.

“I think having a good facility for children, run by a viable company in our community that employs a lot of people … I think is a good partnership for the school,” said Centerville School Board Superintendent Tom Rubel. “I think there’s a potential here for us to do something good for community and kids.”

“This is a great opportunity for our company to provide an important service to our employees, especially mothers of young children,” said Lee Container President Robert Varnedoe. “As our business continues to grow here in Centerville, attracting and retaining great employees is an ever bigger priority. We’re excited about this new Day Care Center and the positive impact it will have for working families in Centerville.”

Varnedoe said that Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds was instrumental in the decision to move forward with the Day Care Center. “It was her encouraging words a couple years ago at the governor’s deer hunt that helped us make the decision to open a day care center,” he said.

“Child care can be a major hurdle for working parents,” Gov. Reynolds said. “Lee Container is taking a proactive step to help dads and moms be present, productive employees.

“This is also an innovative way for the company address the challenge of recruiting and retaining a reliable workforce,” she said. “I am proud to support Lee Container’s commitment to not only its employees, but also their families.”

The new Day Care Center is expected to be open for business in early November.  It is expected that Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds will come to Centerville for a ribbon cutting ceremony at that time.
