“Mayhem” Haunted House Raises Funds for 4H Expo Grounds

By Ellis Codjoe, October 19, 2017

The organizers of what was once dubbed one of the most popular and scariest haunted houses in Ottumwa are at it again.

Lynn Dively, an organizer of the now defunct “Nightmare on Third Street” Haunted House, has brought much of her old crew together to launch the new “Mayhem” Haunted House at the Wapello County Expo Grounds near Ottumwa.

The event opened on Friday, October 13th, with close to 900 people attending the first weekend. “Which was pretty good for being early in the month,” Dively told Ottumwa Radio News. “For it being in a new place and a little bit out of town, I think a few people have some difficulty finding it. And the weather was bad.”

She adds though that poor weather shouldn’t deter you too much, the line is inside the building “so if there is bad weather, then you can wait inside until you go through.”

“It has a little bit of everything,” Dively says of the haunts inside. “There isn’t a set theme this year, we tried to hit on most peoples fears and phobias.”

She says the haunted house is a huge undertaking with at least 35 volunteers helping each night.

The haunted house is open Friday and Saturdays during October, from 6:00 P.M. until Midnight each day. Tickets are $8 at the door.

Organizers are still looking for volunteers. Call 641-682-5491 to help.
